Description
'The Life & Travels Of Mungo Park', published by William P. Nimmo, Edinburgh, 1870. Full green leather binding. Five raised bands and red leather title panel to the spine. 'Bute House' crest stamped to the front board (possibly Bute House, Edinburgh - the current First Minister residence). Lights signs of shelf wear to the extremities but generally presents well. Marbled page edges. Marbled pastedown. Prize inscription to 'William Black' to front endpaper. All other pages remain free from inscription and in good order. SYNOPSIS Mungo Park's first journey between 1795–1797 was commissioned by the African Association, Park; it set out to find the source and course of the Niger River. He faced immense hardships, including a four-month imprisonment by a Moorish chief. He became the first European to locate the Niger River, confirming it flowed eastward. His fatal second journey in 1805 was funded by the British government. Park returned to trace the Niger to its mouth. This expedition was heavily armed and included a large team of Europeans. Park died in Bussa (what is now Nigeria) in 1806. This work includes a memoir of Mungo Park's early life, a reprint of his 1798 book 'Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa', and narratives regarding his fatal second journey..
