Description
A rare pair of vases made by TG Green of Church Gresley, Derbyshire, c1904, in their ‘Ivanhoe’ hand painted slip design, featuring white flowers and leaves over a teal and dark blue base. The decoration is in a thick impasto style which gives them a wonderful painterly feel. TG Green & Co operated from 1864 - 2007 and were best known for their everyday pottery, including a popular Cornishware range. However in the late 19th/early 20th century they developed the Ivanhoe range, possibly in collaboration with Sir Christopher Dresser who was working with other local potteries at the time. Influenced by the arts and crafts movement the designs featured organic floral motifs decorated with slip, and were more artistic and ambitious than their usual offerings. The range is becoming increasingly scarce, with examples held in museum collections. More information can be found at the Gresley Pottery website and if you look at their pinterest archive, you will see an example of a vase with the same design as these. I think these vases are absolutely lovely - they’re right up in street in terms of both design and colour, and it’s always nice to have a pair. Condition: Both vases have crazing to the glaze, but no damage or restoration.
