Historical Context
Dalwhinnie Distillery, founded in 1897 in the Highlands of Scotland, became well known for producing a lighter Highland malt due in part to its exceptionally high-altitude location and soft mountain water source. James Munro & Son Ltd marketed the whisky under the “Munro’s Dalwhinnie” name during the early decades of the 20th century, and surviving branded glass advertising wares from this period are now comparatively scarce.
The form itself is particularly attractive, combining practicality with elegant proportions, the wide flared three way poring lip designed for controlled pouring behind the bar or at a table. Such enamelled whisky water jugs were commonly used in hotels, railway refreshment rooms, gentlemen’s clubs and public houses, where water was served alongside whisky for dilution according to taste..."Whatever is your fancy", as we way in Scotland.
A very appealing and unusual piece of early Scottish whisky advertising glass.
