Description
Late Victorian British Tonalist Charcoal Drawing – ‘Linn of dee Braemar in Scotland’ c.1890–1910 – In the Manner of Atkinson Grimshaw / Whistler A wonderfully atmospheric late Victorian/Edwardian charcoal and chalk drawing on prepared artist’s canvas. Executed in a highly evocative tonal style, the work recalls the atmospheric nocturnes of John Atkinson Grimshaw and the poetic river scenes of the British Aesthetic movement. The original stretcher retains a period Winsor & Newton prepared canvas stamp to the reverse. This is an exceptionally atmospheric piece with superb use of light and shade, capturing the quiet melancholy of an English riverside at dusk. Although unsigned, it is clearly the work of a highly accomplished hand and dates to approximately 1890–1910. Provenance This drawing forms part of an original collection of ten late Victorian and Edwardian British landscape and topographical works acquired together. Several works within the group retain titles and inscriptions, suggesting that they may have originated from a single artist, collector or family archive. We are offering the works individually and will be listing additional examples from the collection separately. Details Title: Linn of dee Braemar (inscribed verso) Artist: British School, unsigned Date: Circa 1890–1910 Medium: Charcoal and chalk on prepared artist’s canvas Influence: In the manner of John Atkinson Grimshaw and the British Tonalist tradition Condition: Unframed, with age-related wear, surface marks and losses consistent with age and use. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form part of the description. Measurements: 30 x 60 x 2 cm A rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully atmospheric British tonal landscape with strong connections to the late Victorian fascination with mood, light and place.
