It is very rare to come across any antique box with the original outer protective case and with the box in such immaculate condition. The box bears a brass crest associated with the Marquess of Queensbury (the family famed for the introduction of boxing regulations) and with links to Castle Douglas in Scotland. (Details supplied with the case). The outer case has done a grand job in protecting the box with just minor wear to the top handle. The canvas case has all of the stud fixings present, is velvet lined and has just one small tear along one of the back corner seams. To the centre is a flap (fully intact) that folds back to access the carrying handle, hence the slight wear. The box measures approximately 12” x 9” x 5 ½”. The entire box is in truly remarkable condition and clearly has had little to no use. Gilt lettering to the interior indicates that the item was retailed by A. Webster Compy. 60 Piccadilly. The premises is located in the West End of London, an area with a long history of up market retailers. Of sturdy construction with support stays to both hinges and a brass connecting rod that acts as a central pin to both hinges and provides increased support. Nice finishing touch of all the screw slots turned inline! Webbing and damask lining to the lid interior and all other leather throughout the interior is in unused condition. Pull tabs still fully intact. Lidded section and inkpot section to the removable tray. What is assumed to be the original inkpot with silver plated top in perfect, unused condition. Velvet and leather lining to the storage area beneath the tray in spotless condition. A box of such quality warrants a fine quality lock. Clearly stamped ‘Bramah London’, the oldest lock manufacturing company in the world with a huge amount of information re’ the company on the website that reflects their reputation and fame. Sadly, the key shown is for decorative purposes only as the key is the only part missing. I find it difficult to believe that there are many leather boxes of the period that can top this box in terms of condition and degree of original features. Would make an excellent jewellery box. Very highly recommended
