Description
This is a rare and collectable set of four, sterling silver, salt or mustard spoons c1765, bearing the makers' marks for the London-trained silversmiths Thomas and William Chawner, from Sudbury in Suffolk. Stamped twice, on all four spoons, it is highly likely that these marks were designed to imitate or represent hallmarks, on first examination, in order to avoid the expense of paying any duty at all on them. Thomas & William Chawner are recorded as being in partnership from 1759 until 1773. The mark on these spoons, however, was used for six years, between 1764 and 1770. With small engraved monograms, these spoons have scallop shell shaped bowls and delicate feather edging. They are also undamaged and with no repairs. Length: 10cm (Just under 4 inches) Width of bowl: 2.7cm (Just over 1 inch) Weight: 38 grams total
