Large 19th-Century Chinese Blue & White Double Happiness Ginger Jar
Brief Description:
This is a large, fabulous 19th-century Chinese blue-and-white porcelain ginger jar and cover.
Of substantial proportions, this impressive antique jar is hand-decorated throughout in underglaze cobalt blue on a traditional white porcelain ground.
The principal decoration comprises repeated, boldly painted Double Happiness (?) symbols, an auspicious Chinese motif traditionally associated with marriage, happiness and harmonious union.
The symbols are surrounded by an extensive and densely painted arrangement of stylised floral and foliate decoration, with further geometric borders around the shoulders, creating a particularly attractive design around the entire body.
The original domed porcelain cover continues the decoration, displaying a further prominent Double Happiness symbol within concentric blue borders.
The underside displays an underglaze-blue double-circle mark, while the unglazed foot rim and lid seating show the expected characteristics and signs of age.
A very decorative and substantial piece of antique Chinese porcelain which displays beautifully and, owing to its scale, makes an impressive statement piece.

Presented in good antique condition overall, with age-related wear, firing imperfections, surface marks and variations within the glaze and decoration commensurate with age and manufacture.
Of particular note is a small firing imperfection to the shoulder, visible in the photographs. This appears consistent with manufacture rather than subsequent damage.
