Description
A genuine mid-19th-century steel plate engraving depicting a bustling colonial street scene in front of the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall), titled "Independence Hall, Phila. Pa. 1776". Engraved by the prominent Scottish American engraver John C. McRae (New York), this piece was originally commissioned as an illustrative bookplate frontispiece for Abbott's History of the American Revolution (circa 1859–1860). This is an authentic antique intaglio print, featuring finely detailed cross-hatched engraving lines and soft, translucent watercolour washes applied entirely by hand. The reverse of the sheet beautifully exhibits a crisp, deep indentation from the original metal printing plate alongside natural paper cockling, verifying its mid-Victorian age and production method. The print is safely hinge-mounted onto a clean white display mat board and is ready for framing. A wonderful, genuine piece of early Americana and architectural history. • Artist/Engraver: John C. McRae (New York) • Date of Manufacture: Circa 1860 • Material: Hand-coloured engraving on woven rag paper • Condition: Good antique condition. Sharp engraving lines and vibrant hand-colouring. The paper remains clean on both sides with no heavy water staining, tears, or severe foxing. Historically hinge-mounted. • Aperture Size: 20cm x 16cm • Mount Size: 30cm x 26cm ---------------------------------------- Delivery, Returns & Terms of Sale ---------------------------------------- Shipping & Packaging: All our items are well packaged using a double-walled "box-in-a-box" method to guarantee safe transit.
