Description

An authentic late-19th-century original wood engraving depicting a vibrant street scene at "The Merchants' Exchange, Philadelphia". This highly detailed work was produced by the celebrated British master engraver, artist, and famed Alpine mountaineer Edward Whymper (1840–1911), bearing his distinct etched signature in the lower right-hand corner.
Originally published circa 1891 to illustrate a comprehensive historical and architectural travelogue of the United States, the print showcases the iconic Greek Revival exchange building alongside a fascinating snapshot of period urban life, complete with an early streetcar, a horse and carriage, and a web of late-Victorian overhead utility lines.
The monochrome engraving has been elegantly enhanced by later hand-coloured translucent watercolour washes, highlighting the roof lines, streetcar, and sky tone.
The print has been mounted into a contemporary charcoal-grey window mat board, accentuating the tones of the print and making it entirely ready to slide into a standard frame.
